Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage your emotions and the emotions of those people around you, including your team. So why is Emotional Intelligence absolutely vital for leaders? I am going to give you 5 reasons…
Reason #1 – Increases your level of Self Awareness
When you are self aware of your own emotions then you are able to recognize them as they happen. By being able to recognize these emotions you are then able to determine your particular strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately, although self awareness has been cited as being the most important capability for a leader to develop, it has been seen to be in short supply amongst leaders.
To increase your level of self awareness it is important that you identify external triggers which cause you to behave in a certain way and in return cause others to behave in a certain way with you. How do you react, or respond to people when they ask you to do something or try to have a conversation with you? If you are reactionary instead of responsive then this is something you need to work on.
I also recommend that you ask your team members how they feel and what you could do to have them feel heard in future. By getting feedback, you can focus on those areas that are troubling your team.
Reason #2 – Allows you to manage your emotions more effectively
When you have a high level of emotional intelligence, you are more easily able to manage your emotions. By doing so, you are unlikely to rush headlong into decisions or let anger take over your behavior. To be a successful leader, you must be able to keep your emotions in check.
Reason #3 – Builds effective communication
As a leader, if you are unable to communicate effectively with your team then you won’t be able to convey directions and clearly express your thoughts to them. When you have high emotional intelligence, you will be able to inspire and motivate your employees.
Reason #4 – Social Awareness
Having social awareness is almost as critical to leadership as self awareness is. With social awareness, it is the ability to pick up the emotions of others around you and to be able to empathise with other peoples situations. If you are a leader that is looking to inspire and motivate your employees, then social awareness is a critical skill.
Reason #5 – Conflict Resolution
In every workplace, there is always the risk that conflicts will disrupt the efficiency and productivity of the office. When you have high levels of With high emotional intelligence, you are better able to handle disputes and provide resolutions to conflicts. With this skill, you can quickly satisfy any disagreements that might arise between your employees.
